Key Findings
- Nearly 9 in 10 Americans have ever held an hourly job (88 percent)
- Responsibility and how to interact with customers or clients are the most important things Americans have learned at an hourly job (24 and 23 percent, respectively)
- Of those who have ever held an hourly job, more than half have worked in a retail environment (54 percent), and nearly as many have held an office or administrative position (46 percent). About 40 percent of people have worked a manufacturing or productions hourly position, and nearly one-third (28 percent) have worked at a fast-food restaurant. (Note: totals reflect multiple responses to the question)
- Of those currently holding a salaried job, 14 percent indicated that they have considered abandoning their current positions in favor of an hourly job, positions that they believe would be less stressful and time-consuming.
- Nearly 1 in 5 Americans are currently thinking about getting a part-time or full-time hourly job (18 percent)
